Balance

Restore with relaxation and sleep. Recharging our batteries is essential. Just like our phones, we won’t operate on 0%!

The Outer Banks is known for its rough oceans and its calm, relaxing atmosphere. Rip currents, nor’easters, big waves, high winds and uneven ocean floors can create a lot of commotion and movement. Yet, even the ocean calms at times in the environment it’s in. Similarly, life has its rough elements, but calmness is possible when we learn to dial back stress and create space for restoration.

There are times for fast-paced, high-action, go-go-go moments in life. Learning how to restore through relaxation and sleep during busy seasons and throughout life is crucial for your well-being and longevity. Understanding the stressors in your life—the high winds, uneven ocean floors, etc.—can help you learn how to dial them back or manage them, allowing for relaxation and good sleep. Embracing the noise life can bring can help you prioritize what truly matters, easing stress levels.

And just like our phones, we can’t operate on 0%. Have you ever felt not like yourself when you’re tired? Having a “full battery” allows us to show up as our best selves and take on any high winds. Restorative sleep charges your battery and provides mental clarity, reduces stress, and helps you feel more patient, creative and connected. It also supports a sharper mind, steadier emotions, weight regulation and a stronger immune system. Even small, consistent moments of rest—a short nap, a mindful breath or an early bedtime—can lead to noticeable improvements in mood and energy.

Sleep helps the brain consolidate memories, muscles recover and systems reset. While we often treat it as something to “catch up on” later, true rest is essential to fully engage with your day, relationships and goals. Rest fuels your fire.

Establishing a bedtime routine can make all the difference prior to slipping in between the sheets. Putting down the phone an hour before bedtime, reading, drinking warm sleepy-time tea, brushing your teeth and enhancing your self-care are all methods you could enjoy doing before going to bed. Even something as simple as slipping into comfortable pajamas can signal to your body that it’s time to unwind. Simple practices, like lowering your thermostat to around 65 degrees, removing any or all light and TVs from the bedroom, charging your phone in a different space, and using a supportive mattress and pillows can help you drift into deeper sleep.

Eliminating alcohol before bed can also improve sleep. Even a single drink has the capability to disrupt your natural sleep cycle by preventing your body from reaching the deep, restorative stages of rest it needs. This deep sleep is called REM (rapid eye movement) sleep—the stage of sleep when you dream and when your brain processes information and memories. Removing that nightcap from your routine can help you wake up more refreshed and energized the next day. Try replacing alcohol with a calming herbal tea, such as valerian root or chamomile.

Sleep is how our bodies physically and mentally recharge—going from 0% to 100%, ready for the next day. Sometimes, though, we need small recharges during waking hours, too. When life feels rushed or overwhelming, take a moment to pause, breathe and recenter yourself. A 20-minute nap can be powerful enough to reset your whole outlook on the day. Consciously putting your phone down for an hour or practicing gratitude are a couple other ways you can relax. Gratitude broadens your perspective, helping you notice the good in any situation and appreciate what you have and where you are—and that mindset alone can bring peace.

When you live in balance, the benefits reach far beyond what’s possible when you’re running on 0%. Take a lesson from the ocean and find stillness amidst the elements of life, and you will radiate a strength and peace—a balance—that inspires those around you.
