Move

Stay active throughout the day!

Your body was meant to move. If you sit a lot for school or work, you will need to be intentional about adding movement to your daily routine.

Our bodies are meant to move, and the more we move, the more we support our well-being. Natural movement is about living in tune with what our bodies are designed to do. Our knees help us bend and rise, our hips provide flexibility, and our arms and hands allow us to create, connect and support others.

Movement keeps every system in the body functioning optimally. It strengthens the heart and lungs, delivering oxygen and nutrients that energize every cell. Muscles and bones grow stronger, supporting balance, posture and stability. The lymphatic system, which clears away waste and toxins, relies on movement to circulate fluid. Gentle, consistent motion also helps prevent discomfort by nourishing joints and stimulating the production of synovial fluid, which reduces stiffness and friction. It keeps tendons and connective tissues supple, allowing the body to move freely for longer and recover more easily. Movement helps us age gracefully throughout the years by supporting our bodies.

In many ways, movement is one of the most natural forms of medicine. It helps prevent serious injuries, alerts us to how our bodies are feeling—showing when extra care is needed—and can even lower the risk of major illnesses. Regular movement can significantly reduce the likelihood of life-threatening conditions such as stroke, cancer, heart disease and weakened bones.

Even the brain benefits; regular activity encourages the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, boosting mood, clarity and focus. Movement can reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep, increase energy, enhance social connection, and build confidence. It feels good to move—physically and mentally.

Many of us spend long hours sitting, often due to work or other obligations. Every bit of intentional movement therefore makes a difference. Short walks, gentle stretches or moments of mindful motion can lift energy, get your blood flowing and ease tension. Small, consistent actions lead to lasting change. Over time, these intentional movements become habits.

You don’t need hours at the gym to make a difference. You can invite mindful movement into your routine. Take short walking breaks, stand while on calls, stretch while waiting, choose the stairs, park farther away, or take the “scenic route” to refill your water. For some, structured exercise may be the best lifestyle choice. But moving throughout the day is about consistency, not intensity. Sometimes intensity comes naturally, and when movement becomes part of your daily life, liveliness follows. Plus, keeping your body in motion can even enhance performance during more focused workouts.

Find ways to weave movement into moments you already have: Garden, play with your kids, dance while cooking or while on a lunch break, or walk with a friend instead of sitting for coffee. These small, joyful motions add up, keeping your body full of life.
