Nourish

Be mindful—what you put in your body matters. Do nourish your body with mostly fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and beans. And avoid putting harmful substances in your body—we all know what they are!

Have you ever heard the expression “You are what you eat”? That saying has stood the test of time because it reflects how our bodies truly work. What we put in our bodies directly affects how we feel, think and move through the world.

Building your diet around nourishing, whole foods creates a foundation for thriving. Now that you know about the expression “You are what you ea”, what about “Food is medicine”? A nourishing diet can prevent diseases, such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. It can also improve skin luminosity and gut health, reduce inflammation, assist in natural movement, and improve mental clarity so you can approach each day with energy and focus.

Aim to fill your diet with foods rich in nutrients and anti-inflammatory properties, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and beans. Nutrient-dense, gut-friendly foods can support digestion, strengthen your immune system, and provide essential vitamins, minerals and fiber your body needs to flourish.

Minimizing or avoiding risky substances, such as alcohol, tobacco or anything that does not support your well-being, is an important step toward lasting energy and balance. Risky substances can reduce your energy, cloud mental clarity, strain relationships and make it harder to stay focused on your goals and sense of purpose. When our bodies are functioning at their best, there’s more room for joy, creativity and connection. When we eat well, we feel well. When we feel well, we live well. When we live well, we impact others in a positive way. And when that happens, we create a community that thrives. A little effort can have a big ripple effect.

The most effective way to boost your diet is by focusing on what you can add, rather than focusing on what you can’t or shouldn’t have. Swapping a few ingredients for lighter options can be just as simple. Following a strict diet or setting the bar too high can lead to burnout and may even leave you feeling worse than when you started. Think nourishment abundance, not restrictions.

Try drinking a mocktail instead of an alcoholic beverage at dinner, choosing mints instead of vapes or cigarettes, swapping heavy cream for Greek yogurt, using cane sugar in place of refined sugar, or opting for sparkling water instead of soda. Add fruit to your breakfast and dark leafy greens to meals, sprinkle nuts or seeds on snacks, and include beans or lentils in salads and soups. Reading labels and choosing foods with minimal added ingredients can also make a noticeable difference in how you feel. Another simple shift is to reserve sugary treats or drinks for dining out rather than keeping them at home, helping you focus on nourishing foods and drinks in your everyday environment.

It’s all about creating a healthy foundation, enjoying it 80% of the time and allowing for moments to relish in for the remaining 20%. There is so much opportunity for creative cooking and exploring different flavors. Having an open mind and willingness to try new things can be a gateway to discovering new staples in your diet. Over weeks and months, these small changes become habits, creating a nourishing routine that strengthens your body and mind from the inside out. Plant the seed of nourishment and watch how far it can grow. After all, nourishing yourself feels good and can be fun!
